Soon the internet will be running
faster on the moon than on this earth. Researchers from MIT (Massachusetts
Institute of Technology) working with NASA demonstrated the data communication
technology making it possible to receive larger amounts of data and stream
video and audio from the earth to moon and vice versa. At 19.44 mbps data was
successfully transmitted from earth to moon along with the upload speed of 622 mbps
(4800 times faster than the previous record). It a RF based new system and the
link was achieved via four separate telescopes based at a ground terminal in
New Mexico.

The download speed is more than
six times faster than the download speed achieved by the best radio system ever
flown to the moon and the NASA’s Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration laser
space terminal is half the weight and uses 25% less power than the previous
record.The transmitted signal start at
40 watts, but it ends as a “billionth of a watt” signal when it gets to the
moon.
“This
will be the first time that we present both the implementation overview
and how well it actually worked” said Mark Stevens of MIT” The on-orbit
performance was excellent and close to what we’d predicted, giving us
confidence that we have good understanding of the underlying physics” he added.
